39 Year Marketing Career With Three Fortune 50 Companies:

Jim’s ten years (1997-2007) as EVP & Chief Marketing Officer at Wachovia represents one of the longest tenured runs of modern day CMOs (who have an average tenure of roughly 3 years).

Jim’s experience in marketing and advertising positions at IBM, Compaq and Wachovia complement his sales background in terms of understanding the business process from brand building and demand generation all the way through to closing the sale. Jim’s work at both IBM and Compaq makes him very comfortable solving problems with technical solutions.

During his career, Jim has led numerous major restructuring initiatives at different companies, each with the objective of reducing costs while improving efficiency and brand consistency. His most ambitious of these was during 2006-2007 at Wachovia when he led an effort that involved centralizing all marketing organizations. At the beginning of this effort, there were well over 400 marketing employees in the company that ultimately became part of Corporate Marketing. A newly designed structure reduced the workforce by 20% with no negative impact in terms of quality of work done or ability to handle the workload. Jim Garrity may be personally best-known among senior marketing executives for having served as a member of the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) board of directors from 1994 until 2007 (Chairman in 1998).

Jim’s interest in digital marketing first came to the forefront in 1995 when he proposed that the ANA create a New Technologies Marketing Committee (now known as the Digital Marketing Committee) – a recommendation that was readily accepted by the Association. Jim went on to chair this committee at the ANA from 1995 until he retired from Wachovia in 2007.  Jim enjoys every aspect of digital communications and immerses himself in emerging technologies as they evolve. He has found the accountability that the digital marketing world enables is a great complement to his personal commitment to demonstrate ROI on all marketing investments.

The next chapter:  Consulting and Board Work:

Jim retired from Wachovia in 2007 and founded BridgeTwoWorlds, LLC., a marketing consultancy helping advertisers, agencies and digital media companies bridge the gap between the worlds of traditional and digital communications.  His broad sales and marketing background makes him well-suited to the work of BridgeTwoWorlds

Further, with his deep involvement for the past 10 years in the marketing and media arena, he is very experienced at solving marketing problems with innovative technology platforms and programs.
